"On Feb. 25, 2007, we were busy setting up for a banquet at the youth & ag building when I heard a loud crash and realized to my dismay that a large wooden display cabinet had fallen on my 3-year-old daughter, Olivia," Sarah Landon says. Olivia was rushed to Grant Regional, where an emergency room nurse immediately began evaluating her injuries. Olivia sustained injuries to her head and nose, and both bones in her lower left leg were broken.
"Even though the ER staff was extremely busy with other patients, they were there for Olivia when she needed them the most," Sarah says. "I was impressed with how gentle everyone was with her and genuinely concerned for her well-being. As a mother, it was comforting to know that I was placing my child into the hands of such caring people."
After six weeks in a leg cast, Olivia is healing and slowly returning to the active, busy lifestyle of a 3-year-old.
"It's something you take for granted—having an excellent hospital close by," Sarah says. "That is, until you find yourself in a situation where you can't get to the hospital fast enough."
"I don't know of anything worse than seeing your child hurt. I hope that is something I don't experience again for a very long time."
