"I thought it was just heart burn. I didn’t feel those classic warning signs like an elephant sitting on my chest," Pat explained. "I had back pain instead and unfortunately ignored that too long."
As a Grant County Board Supervisor, Pat is very involved in county activities including the annual Grant County Fair. "Yes, you could say I keep very busy. Someday I’ll slow down…maybe," he smiles. "After my bride insisted on a stress test, I was surprised at how very serious my condition was. I ended up having open heart surgery. Little did I know that after being hospitalized 6 days, I’d be right back there on day 8. I had 'what they called' a bleeder and was rushed to Grant Regional where I was stabilized and later transferred to a Dubuque hospital. Dubuque doctors also told me that if it weren't for Grant Regional's Emergency Team, the fast response and appropriate critical care they provided, I wouldn’t have made it to Dubuque! Now that makes me have a whole new appreciation for our local hospital! We’re pretty fortunate to have such a great facility in our backyard. I’m never excited to visit a hospital. But now I’m just so thankful of the great care they provided and the reassurance that it’s going to be there when I need it—day or night, 24/7!"
