Grant Regional Health Center recently partnered with Crossing Rivers Health, Gunderson Boscobel Area Hospital and Clinics, and Southwest Technical College (SWTC), to offer a Couch to 5k wellness program with the goal to help improve the health of their communities and region.
The 8-week wellness program culminated in a special 5k race day on Saturday, May 14 at Southwest Tech (SWTC) campus in Fennimore, WI, with 157 pre-registered and 21 same-day registrations for a grand total of 178 walkers/runners.
The Couch to 5k program was designed to provide an opportunity to gradually get more active by walking and/or running over an 8-week timeframe with the ultimate goal to complete a 5k (3.1-mile walk/run).
Leading up to race day, participants chose one of four locations in Fennimore, Lancaster, Boscobel, or Prairie du Chien for (4) in-person education/activity sessions. This provided participants with a 30-minute health topic related to walking/running and 30 minutes of activity with lots of support and inspiration included to help them meet their weekly goals outlined in the program.
Offering this type of program was planned in response to a recent Community Health Needs Assessment completed by the three area hospitals in the Fall of 2021. The assessment results identified the need for more socialization/connection and physical activity to be offered locally.
“We were proud to offer this program and see the wonderful impact it had throughout our region,” said Stacy Martin, Grant Regional Health Center. “We hope this will provide a spark and encourage those to continue their wellness journey and become more active in their daily lives.”
The program was made possible in part by a grant funded by the Wisconsin Office of Rural Health and contributing time/funds from the three hospitals and SWTC.
