What are cosmetic neurotoxin injections?
Cosmetic neurotoxin injections are safe, FDA-approved, non-surgical treatments that work by temporarily blocking nerve signals to specific muscles. This allows the muscles to relax, which helps soften existing expression lines and slows the formation of new wrinkles. You may recognize these treatments by brand names such as Botox or Jeuveau.
Who is a good candidate for cosmetic neurotoxins?
Good candidates for cosmetic neurotoxin treatments typically meet the following criteria:
- Moderate expression lines: Individuals beginning to notice lines caused by facial expressions often see the best results. Deeply etched wrinkles can be more difficult to treat. While many people assume these treatments are best started in their 40s or 50s, beginning earlier, such as in your 20s or 30s, can help slow the progression of visible aging.
- Specific areas of concern: Neurotoxin injections are most commonly used to treat frown lines between the eyebrows, crow’s feet around the eyes, and forehead lines. Other areas may be considered, but treatment recommendations depend on individual facial anatomy and safety considerations.
- Good overall health: Patients should be in generally good health. Those with active infections, severe illnesses, or certain muscle or nerve conditions may not be appropriate candidates.
- Realistic expectations: Neurotoxins do not erase wrinkles completely. They temporarily reduce the appearance of wrinkles caused by muscle movement and do not improve static wrinkles that are present when the face is at rest. These treatments are not permanent. Results typically last three to six months and vary from person to person.
When cosmetic neurotoxins may not be recommended. Cosmetic neurotoxin injections may not be appropriate if any of the following apply:
- Pregnancy or breastfeeding: Neurotoxin treatments should be avoided during pregnancy and while breastfeeding.
- Taking certain medications: Blood thinners and some other medications can increase the risk of bruising or complications. Be sure to tell your provider about all medications and supplements you are taking, including over-the-counter products.
- Allergies: Neurotoxins contain ingredients that may cause allergic reactions in some individuals. All known allergies should be discussed during your consultation.
- Skin concerns: Active skin infections, rashes, or irritation near the treatment area should be fully resolved before treatment.
- Specific medical conditions: Neurotoxin injections are not recommended for individuals with muscle weakness conditions such as Myasthenia Gravis, bleeding disorders, severe asthma, or difficulty swallowing.
