Swing Bed: Shorten the Distance Between Healing & Home

HAVING A MAJOR MEDICAL EVENT OR PROCEDURE can be one of the scariest times imaginable. While lying in the hospital bed, many fear what impact this event could have on their life and that of their friends and families. While you process these fears and emotions, many decisions need to be made sometimes very quickly. This can be overwhelming, but Grant Regional is here to help!

EXTENDED STAYS IN THE HOSPITAL can leave you weak and deconditioned. The healthcare team may begin talking about options for rehabilitation centers in your area. During this conversation, Swing Bed will likely be brought up. Many people question what this word means. They envision large beds swinging from side to side, or cozy hammocks hanging from the ceiling. No matter where your mind goes, you might wonder what this bed has to do with your weakness and journey to recovery?

TO ANSWER THIS QUESTION, we must describe the story behind the name “Swing Bed.” In the 1970’s, Medicare created the Swing Bed program to help meet the physical needs of the community. Swing Bed allows the hospital to use medical beds for health needs or short-term rehabilitation in the form of physical, occupational, speech therapy, and/or longer duration IV antibiotic needs. This program allows Grant Regional to switch or “swing” the category of the bed to meet the medical and /or rehabilitation needs of the patient. This happens by “swinging” or changing the medical chart from the hospital designation to a rehabilitation category!

GRANT REGIONAL TAKES GREAT PRIDE in the work we have done to enhance our Swing Bed program. We have invested in newly upgraded, private rooms so you can recover in comfort.
