Home for the holidays with the help of Grant Regional’s Swing Bed program

For many, the holiday season can be a special time filled with hope as the new year approaches. For Joanne, she is feeling that same sense of hope and gratitude following her recent hospital stay at Grant Regional. Joanne was recently diagnosed with Parkinson's disease and because of the compassionate, expert care at Grant Regional, Joanne is now looking forward to being home for the holidays.

On December 1, she was taken to an ER because of several falls and being unsteady. After learning of her new condition and needing more recovery time, she was given the opportunity to choose Grant Regional's Swing Bed program to be closer to home and family. Her 2-week Swing Bed stay helped her to focus on her health, regain her strength and learn new ways to continue her progress at home. Joanne received individualized care including daily physical therapy, nutrition consultation and important resources including more information about a program to help patients with Parkinson’s disease, which she is set to start soon.

She is a breast cancer survivor and has been through several surgeries including two hip replacement surgeries, but she doesn't allow anything to slow her down for long. Instead of thinking about the past or thinking too far into the future, this holiday season Joanne has decided to focus on the present. Parkinson's disease is a very serious health condition but she feels she received the right care at the right time. With medication and proper care, she believes her strength and determination will make all the difference.

With the help of Grant Regional's healthcare team, Joanne is now stronger and ready to return home. "From the nurses and physical therapists to Dr. Eli James and his knowledge, to the wonderful food and very clean rooms, I'm so impressed with everything. I hadn't been to Grant Regional in quite a few years. I'm amazed at how much it's changed,” explains Joanne.

"Being here at Grant Regional and receiving this specialized care for my new health condition has been so important to my recovery and my outlook to move forward. Parkinson's disease is not the end, it's the beginning. I've been through a lot in my life, making me a strong person. And being here has helped me feel more confident and ready to get back home. I’m looking forward to spending time over the holidays with my family and especially my grandchildren a little more this year.”
